The Socrates Award is an annual football award that acknowledges humanitarian work by a champion footballer. The award is named after Brazilian national team legend, Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, commonly known as just Socrates. The Socrates Award was first presented in 2022, one of the awards at the Ballon dOr gala presentation night. The inaugural winner in 2022 was former Liverpool forward and current Bayern Munich player Sadio Mané, who received the award in honor of his humanitarian work in his native Senegal, which included funding a school and hospital in his hometown of Bambali. The 2023 Socrates Award was won by Vinicius Junior, a Real Madrid player, for his charitable foundation supporting underprivileged children in Brazil. The award also recognizes a players fight against racism. It is important to note that there are other awards named Socrates Award, such as the Socrates Award for Excellence in Teaching given for outstanding teaching for tenure-track faculty members who have not yet received tenure, and the Socrates Award presented by the Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation to individuals who best embody the mantra of the Socrates creed, generally derived from the Latin phrase.
