Starlink is a satellite network developed by SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, that aims to provide high-speed broadband internet around the world, particularly in places with poor connectivity. The network consists of over 5,000 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers. The satellites orbit approximately 342 miles (550 kilometers) above Earth and can be visible from the ground, appearing as a string of bright lights in the sky, known as the "satellite train" or "space train". The satellites are frequently called the "satellite train" or "space train" and have prompted numerous UFO-sighting reports when they first took to the skies. The satellites are visible to the unaided eye and can appear as a string of pearls or a "train" of bright lights moving across the night sky. The satellites are easier to see a day or two after their launch and deployment, then become progressively harder to spot as they climb to their final orbital height of around 342 miles (550 km) . The Starlink satellites are not as visible nowadays compared to when they first appeared due to efforts such as the Starlink VisorSat program, which aims to darken the satellites so as to not interfere as much with astronomical observations.
