The tetanus shot is available in four different types of vaccines in the United States, all of which provide protection against tetanus and other diseases:

  • Diphtheria and tetanus (DT) vaccines
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) vaccines
  • Tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccines
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines

Babies and children younger than 7 years old receive DTaP or DT, while older children and adults receive Tdap and Td. The Td vaccine is used to protect adolescents and adults from tetanus and diphtheria. The Td vaccine is usually used as a booster shot to provide continued protection after peoples initial vaccinations during childhood. The Tdap vaccine is recommended for everyone starting at age 11 or 12 years, and booster shots using Td or Tdap vaccine are recommended through adulthood.
