The Tulane mascot has gone through several changes throughout the years. In its infancy, the mascot was depicted as a pelican riding on a surfboard, which lasted for more than 50 years. In 1964, the school decided to replace the mischievous boy mascot, Greenie, with the Green Wave mascot, which became synonymous with the programs nickname. The original Green Wave mascot became known as the "Angry Wave," which was meant to depict how a wave looks as it breaks, but the costume for the mascot was essentially a giant green sack with a face. In 1986, Tulane replaced the angry wave with a sleeker, slimmer, happier Green Wave, which became known as "Gumby" due to its resemblance to the cartoon character. Finally, in 1998, Tulane introduced Riptide the Pelican, who continues to serve as the mascot to this day. Therefore, the current Tulane mascot is Riptide the Pelican.
