The Twelfth Man is a term used to describe the entire student body at Texas A&M University, who stand during the entire game to show their support for the football team. The tradition of the Twelfth Man was born on January 2, 1922, when an underdog Aggie team was playing Centre College, then the nations top-ranked team. As the hard-fought game progressed, injuries depleted the Aggie roster, and the coach called for E. King Gill, a student who was in the stands, to suit up and stand ready to play if needed. Although Gill never entered the game, his willingness to serve his team has passed down from generation to generation of Aggies for nearly one hundred years, as Texas A&M’s student section stands together during entire football and basketball games, a symbol of the 12th Man on the team. The 12th Man tradition also took musical form, and the 12th Man sings a song after each game in which the Aggies are outscored. In addition, the 12th Man Kick-Off Team, composed of regular students through open tryouts, was created in the 1980s by Coach Jackie Sherrill, and later, Head Coach R.C. Slocum changed the team to allow only one representative of the 12th Man on the kick-off team. The term "12th Man" has been trademarked by Texas A&M University, and the university has taken legal action against other organizations that use the term without permission).
