The giant huntsman spider (Heteropoda maxima) is commonly cited as the world’s largest spider by leg span, with a leg span reaching up to about 30 cm (1 foot). However, the goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) is the heaviest and longest-bodied spider, with masses up to around 175 grams and body lengths up to about 13 cm, making it the largest by mass and body size, while still behind the giant huntsman in leg span. The two species are often named together in discussions of “largest spiders,” distinguished by whether the measurement emphasis is leg span (giant huntsman) or overall body mass and length (goliath birdeater).
