Therian is a term that can refer to two different things. The first is a subclass of mammals called Theria, which includes eutherians (including placental mammals) and metatherians (including marsupials), but excludes egg-laying monotremes and various extinct mammals evolving prior to the common ancestor of placentals and marsupials. The second meaning of therian refers to individuals who identify as a non-human animal to some degree. These individuals may feel that they are not quite human on the inside, and may view their animal identity as an intrinsic, involuntary identity, similar to sexuality or gender. It is important to note that being a therian is distinct from being a furry, which is a person who admires anthropomorphic animals and may dress as one, often creating original characters called "fursonas".
