Thomas Shelby, the main character in the TV series Peaky Blinders, is constantly smoking cigarettes throughout the show. However, he is also shown smoking brown opium from a clay pipe at night in seasons 1 and 2 to minimize the stress and symptoms of his PTSD from World War I. The opium is a coping mechanism for his PTSD and is tied to his gypsy roots. In addition to Tommy smoking the narcotic, we also see Daniel Owen, a.k.a. Danny Whizz-Bang, smoking the same substance. It is worth noting that while the characters in the show smoke frequently, smoking is not recommended in real life due to its harmful effects on health.
