Tik is a highly addictive drug in the stimulant class, also known as crystal methamphetamine. It is commonly smoked in a light bulb or a glass pipe called a “lolly”. Tik is cheap, widely available, and easy to make, which has contributed to its rapid increase in use in South Africa. The drug is commonly sold as a combination of amphetamines, talcum powder, baking powder, starch, glucose, quinine, battery acid, anti-freeze, acetone, drain cleaner, and large amounts of cold and flu medication. The impact of the drug depends on its interaction with the person using it, but it generally gives users a sense of confidence and euphoria. Tik use is highly addictive and harms the functioning of the central nervous system. The long-term effects of Tik include the risk of addiction, sexual dysfunction, chronic use resulting in psychosis, violence, confusion, and risk of suicide.
