Tip creeping is a term used to describe the practice of businesses asking for tips in situations where it was not traditionally expected, such as at coffee shops, farmers markets, auto shops, and retail outlets. This practice has become more common due to the rise of digital payment systems and the creation of digital tip jars. Many businesses have removed traditional tip jars and now credit card kiosks demand that consumers cough up a few extra bucks when they swipe. The digital kiosks that ask for tips start at 18% or 20% and can go as high as 30%, which is up from the 15% that used to be traditional. The rise of tip creeping has led to tip fatigue, where customers are starting to object to the pressure to tip, especially when they dont feel its warranted.
