Tollywood is the informal term for the Telugu-language film industry based in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India. It is the largest film industry in India in terms of box-office, with Telugu films selling 23.3 crore (233 million) tickets in 2022. The nickname Tollywood is a portmanteau of the words Telugu and Hollywood. Most Telugu cinema is filmed in Hyderabad, where they have their own little “Tinsel town” called Film Nagar.

Tollywood has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1900s when Indian filmmaker Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu started a film studio called Glass Studio and directed some of Indias earliest silent movies. In 1932, Indian director H.M. Reddy gave Telugu cinema its first talkie in the Hindu mythological film, Bhakta Prahlada.

Tollywood produces about 300 to 500 films every year. It is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to the Tamil film industry based out of Chennai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tollywood is different from Bollywood, which is primarily centralized in Mumbai and produces Hindi-language films.
