Torts is a course taught in law school that covers the law of personal injuries to physical and emotional well-being and to property. It considers issues involved in determining whether the law should require a person to compensate for harm intentionally or unintentionally caused. Torts are acts or omissions that give rise to injury or harm to another and amounts to a civil wrong for which courts impose liability. The primary aims of tort law are to provide relief to injured parties for harms caused by others, to impose liability on parties responsible for the harm, and to deter others from committing harmful acts. Tort law defines what counts, in the eyes of the law, as wrongfully injuring another person – assault, fraud, libel, malpractice, negligence, and nuisance are all torts. The course covers the definitions of the different torts, available defenses, the nature of tort remedies, and the like, as well as advanced instruction in the history, policy dimensions, and theory of tort law, and its relation to insurance and government regulation.
