It allows the consolidation of VLAN traffic onto a shared infrastructure by adding VLAN information to Ethernet frames using the trunking function. Trunks typically connect switching centers in a communications system, and the signals can convey any type of communications data. Trunking is a key architectural component of VLANs, and it enables logical separation and isolation of VLAN traffic while increasing network efficiency by lowering the number of physical links required. There are three types of trunking: port trunking, VLAN trunking, and IP trunking. Port trunking is a method of combining individual Ethernet links to act as one logical link, while VLAN trunking is integral to VLAN configuration. IP trunking refers specifically to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Trunking enhances network efficiency by combining VLAN traffic onto a single physical link, resulting in a smaller physical infrastructure, reducing network complexity, and doing away with the requirement for redundant lines. It also streamlines network management and troubleshooting while increasing overall network performance and reducing cable clutter.
