Tulane Universitys mascot is the Green Wave, and the current mascot is Riptide the Pelican, who has served as the mascot since 1998. The original Green Wave mascot became known as the "Angry Wave," which was meant to depict how a wave looks as it breaks, but the costume for the mascot was essentially a giant green sack with a face. In 1964, a new mascot was created, which was a mean-looking anthropomorphic wave-crest, and it was officially adopted as the new mascot for Tulane athletics. A full redesign of all athletics logos and marks was commissioned in 1998, replacing the "angry wave" and "wavy T" designs with a green and blue oblique T crested by a foamy wave. Gumby was replaced with a new pelican mascot, recalling the university seal, and the fact that a pelican was Tulanes original mascot. In its infancy, Tulanes mascot was depicted as a pelican riding on a surfboard, and the surfing pelican image lasted for more than 50 years.
