The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a social welfare scheme launched by the Indian government in May 2016. The scheme aims to provide clean cooking fuel in the form of LPG to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The scheme was launched to safeguard the health of women and the household from consumption of unhealthy fuels by providing them with clean cooking fuel in the form of LPG. The scheme also seeks to empower women in rural India by issuing connections under the name of the women in the household. The scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection to the BPL households. The administrative cost of Rs. 1600 per connection, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, booklet, safety hose, etc. would be borne by the Government. The scheme was launched with a budgetary allocation of ₹80 billion (US$1.0 billion) to distribute 50 million LPG connections to women of BPL families. The scheme was replaced by the Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 in 2021, which aims to provide an additional allocation of 1.6 Crore LPG Connections under the PMUY Scheme with special facility to migrant households. The scheme has already provided more than 5 crore LPG connections to BPL families as per the latest estimates. The key objective of the scheme is to protect the health of women and children by providing clean cooking fuel and reducing their dependency on conventional cooking fuels such as coal and firewood, which will lower indoor smoke pollution and the risk of related diseases. The scheme has been successful in increasing LPG usage and reducing air pollution, deforestation, and health disorders among citizens.
