Understeer is a term used in vehicle dynamics to describe the sensitivity of a vehicle to steering. It occurs when a car steers less than the amount commanded by the driver, meaning that the car turns less than is desired when a corner is being taken. Understeer is an undesirable behavior that can be accompanied by the tires screeching as they lose grip. It is more associated with front-wheel-drive cars than rear-wheel-drive cars, and it can be caused by entering a corner with too much speed, accelerating too much through the corner, or braking too hard when turning in. Understeer can be corrected by slowing down, being more patient with throttle application on corner exit, or changing the cars setup.
