Understeer is a term used in vehicle dynamics to describe the sensitivity of a vehicle to steering. It occurs when a car steers less than the amount commanded by the driver, meaning that the car turns less than is desired when a corner is being taken. Understeer is an undesirable behavior that can be accompanied by the tires screeching as they lose grip. It is more associated with front-wheel-drive cars than rear-wheel-drive cars, and it can be caused by entering a corner with too much speed, accelerating too much through the corner, or braking too hard when turning in.
