Unemployment insurance is a form of social security/insurance that provides financial support to employees who lose their job as a result of termination by their employer. The UAEs unemployment insurance scheme is a mandatory program that all Emirati and foreign employees in the public and private sectors must subscribe to from January 1, 2023. The scheme applies to all workers in the government and private sector, for both Emiratis and residents. The financial support is given in exchange for a monthly insurance premium, paid by the employee during their employment. The scheme pays employees a cash sum for a maximum of three months if they lose their jobs, and compensation is calculated at 60% of their basic salary. Employees earning less than AED16,000 will be eligible to receive up to AED10,000 per month, and those earning more than AED16,000 will be eligible for a maximum of AED20,000 per month. To be eligible for the scheme, employees must have worked and subscribed for at least 12 months to it, and as long as they have not been dismissed for disciplinary reasons or because they resigned. The scheme applies to UAE nationals and expatriate employees employed in the government and private sectors, but it does not apply to employees on temporary employment agreements, investors, domestic workers, individuals under age 18, pensioners who have joined a new employer, or those dismissed for disciplinary reasons. Employees can subscribe to the insurance scheme online through Dubai Insurance, and they can pay their insurance premiums on a monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually basis using various subscription channels, including online, banks ATM, kiosk machines, money exchange companies among others.
