The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is an international organization responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system. It was established by Maurice Strong, its first director, after the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in June 1972. UNEPs mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. UNEP uses its expertise to strengthen environmental standards and practices while helping implement environmental obligations at the country, regional, and global levels. Some of the key areas of concentration for UNEP include climate change, nature, pollution, sustainable development, and resource efficiency/sustainable consumption and production. UNEP provides information and data on the global environment to stakeholders including governments, non-governmental organizations, and the public for them to engage in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP is also a founding partner for the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy, which is a public-private partnership that aims to promote a circular economy.
