United Way is an international network of over 1,800 local nonprofit fundraising affiliates. It is the largest nonprofit organization in the United States by donations from the public, prior to 2016. United Way mobilizes communities around the world to close gaps and open opportunities so everyone can thrive. Through its global network spanning 37 countries and 1,100 communities, United Way connects partners, donors, volunteers, and community leaders to tackle the root causes of the world’s most complex challenges while making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people. United Ways impact areas include health, education, and economic mobility.

Each local United Way is run independently and incorporated separately as a 501(c)(3) organization, with its own board of directors, independent of United Way Worldwide or a parent organization. United Way raises funds and then passes them on to nonprofit agencies, and it has been labeled a "middleman" by some. However, United Way has evolved to focus more on community impact programs and advocating for policies that help low-income individuals and families move up.

United Way provides financial support to partner agencies that help people who need shelter, food, a friend, and those who have disabilities and illnesses. The money raised by United Way stays in the community where it was raised, helping the people who actually live there. United Way also helps people navigate natural disasters, economic hardship, housing instability, and more. Monthly donations are the easiest, most effective way to guarantee access to the support needed and help United Way continue to advocate for critical resources like affordable housing, rent relief, and quality education for everyone.
