A UTR number, or Unique Transaction Reference number, is a unique identifier assigned to every financial transaction made through the banking system or financial institution. It is used to track and identify a specific bank transaction in India. The UTR number is a 16- or 22-character alphanumeric code that is standardized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the length will depend on which of the two major networks your bank chooses for sending funds. The UTR number is not the same as a bank account number or IBAN, as it identifies a transaction, not an account. The UTR number is used to monitor fund transfers if they are delayed, stuck, or if you intend to refer to any previous transaction for whatever reasons. The UTR number can be found on the recipient bank statement, transfer receipt, or email confirmation. In the UK, UTR stands for Unique Taxpayer Reference, which is a 10-digit number assigned to individuals and companies when they register for Self Assessment or set up a limited company.
