The Vande Bharat Express is a semi-high-speed train service operated by Indian Railways. It is similar to the Shatabdi Express and connects Indian cities that are less than 10 hours apart. The trainsets can achieve semi-high speeds, but due to speed restrictions, multiple stoppages, and traffic congestion, the maximum permissible speed of the services is limited to 160 km/h (99 mph) on a section of the Delhi-Bhopal service, and 110–130 km/h (68–81 mph) on other services. The trainset, formerly known as Train 18, was designed by the RDSO and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The specifications were also standardized by the RDSO. It was made for low-cost maintenance and operational optimization. The cost of a 16-coach Vande Bharat train is about ₹115 crore (US$14 million). The train is equipped with world-class passenger amenities, such as WiFi connectivity, 32-inch entertainment screens, and massive glass windows. The Vande Bharat Express now functions on over 30 routes across India, and the total number of these semi-high-speed trains in India has reached 34. The train has become a popular mode of transport within the country, as it cuts down on travel time and improves a travelers journey.
