Vikalp is an alternative train accommodation scheme introduced by IRCTC in 2016. It is designed to provide a better chance of getting a confirmed berth or seat to passengers who are unable to get a confirmed ticket by choosing to opt for a Vikalp train or class. Here are some key details about the Vikalp scheme:
- The scheme is being launched on a pilot basis on Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Jammu sector only.
- The scheme is implemented only across Mail/Express trains.
- The scheme is applicable to all waiting list passengers irrespective of booking quota and concession.
- Passengers who have booked a waitlisted ticket in any class can opt for an alternate train or class, subject to availability.
- A user gets to opt for a maximum of seven alternative trains, according to IRCTC.
- Vikalp does not mean that confirmed berth will be provided to passengers in the alternate train. It is subject to train and berth availability.
- Once confirmed in the alternate train, cancellation charges will be as per your berth/train status in the alternate train.
To use the Vikalp option, passengers need to follow these steps:
- Visit the IRCTC website or app and log in to your account.
- Enter the details of your journey, including the source and destination stations, travel date, and class of travel.
- Select the "Vikalp" option while booking the ticket.
- If the Vikalp option is selected, the passenger will be given an option to choose alternate trains or classes.
- If the passenger gets Vikalp ticket confirmation on the alternate train or class, they will receive an SMS and an email. If the ticket is not confirmed, the passenger will remain on the waitlist and can choose to opt for another alternate train or class.
The Vikalp scheme has several benefits for passengers who are unable to get a confirmed ticket on their preferred train or class:
- Higher chances of getting a confirmed ticket.
- No extra charges.
- Passengers can choose from a maximum of seven alternative trains.
- Passengers can choose an alternative train or class of their choice.
- Passengers can cancel the ticket without any charges if the ticket is not confirmed in the alternate train.
