A Virtual ID (VID) is a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number. It is an alternative to the Aadhaar number and can be used in lieu of the Aadhaar number whenever authentication or KYC (Know Your Customer) is required. The VID is generated against an Aadhaar number and can be used for e-KYC done at both private and government organizations. It can also be used for Aadhaar card download from UIDAIās online portal. The VID is a revocable code that is valid for at least one day and can be changed with the change in date, i.e., at 00:00 am. UIDAI has made various upgrades in its system through the VID, and some of the salient features of the virtual ID are:
- The virtual ID is a temporary 16-digit code that will replace Aadhaar for authentication.
- There is only one virtual ID issued at a time. When a new VID is issued, the old one is flushed out.
- Agencies have to update their system to include VIDs by 31st May 2019.
- Aadhaar number cannot be retrieved from the virtual ID.
The VID serves as an additional security measure to address concerns of Aadhaar Card misuse. The VID, a temporary 16-digit number associated with each Aadhaar Card, can be generated multiple times and masks the actual information on the card. While both Aadhaar and VID serve similar purposes for authentication, the VID provides an extra layer of security as it can be easily revoked and regenerated.
