The Vizhinjam project is a deep-water container transshipment port under construction located in Vizhinjam, near Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. It is Indias first deep-water transshipment terminal and is being developed in three distinct phases. The port is designed primarily to cater to container transshipment besides multi-purpose and break bulk cargo. The project is being developed in a landlord model with a Public Private Partnership component on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (“DBFOT”) basis. The private partner, the Concessionaire M/s Adani Vizhinjam Port Private limited, has commenced construction on December 5, 2015. The port is being built on a public-private-partnership (PPP) mode with funding from the Kerala government, Centre, and the Adani Ports Private Limited being the developer. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by May 2024. The port has the potential to give a tremendous boost to the country’s maritime trade, which is currently suffering due to the lack of a major port in southern India. The port is located just 18 kilometers from the international east-west shipping route, connecting Western Asia, Europe, Africa, and the far eastern areas of the world, whereas Colombo, Sri Lanka, is 50 kilometers away. The port handling capacity is envisaged to be 4.1 million TEU/annum at the completion of the project and would cater to 12000 TEU vessels.
