Water retention, also known as edema, is a condition where excess fluid builds up in the body tissues, including the skin. The lymphatic system is responsible for draining this fluid from tissues and returning it to the bloodstream. When the fluid isnt removed from the tissues, it causes swelling or puffiness in the affected area. The symptoms of water retention include bloating, swollen legs, feet, and ankles, puffiness of the abdomen, face, and hips, stiff joints, weight fluctuations, and skin that doesnt bounce back if pressed.
Water retention can be caused by several factors, including hormonal changes, pregnancy, lack of physical activity, chronic kidney disease, congestive heart failure, capillary leak syndrome, lymphatic dysfunction, obesity, malnutrition, allergies, infections, and certain medications. Some of the common causes of fluid retention include standing or sitting for long periods, hot weather, and gravity.
Mild fluid retention can be treated by reducing salt intake, wearing loose clothing, and elevating the affected area. Some herbs, such as dandelion, horsetail, and parsley, are believed to help reduce water retention. In some cases, medical treatment may be necessary, especially if fluid retention is a symptom of an underlying condition such as heart failure, kidney disease, or liver cirrhosis.
