Widevine L1 is a certification level for digital rights management (DRM) protection that ensures video streaming content is secure and cannot be copied or redistributed illegally. Widevine is a solution that checks the security of video data streams on a device and keeps it safe from being copied illegally. It was acquired by Google in 2010 and has since become the de facto DRM solution for Android devices. Widevine has three levels of security: L1, L2, and L3. Widevine L1 is the highest degree of DRM protection, and video decryption and processing take place entirely within the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) in devices that support it. Widevine L1-certified devices can play videos at the best resolution possible. Widevine L2 incorporates software-based video processing or dedicated video hardware, and Widevine L2 devices sometimes have a higher resolution output than Widevine L3 devices, up to 540p resolution. Widevine L3 is the most basic certification supported, consisting entirely of software-based DRM, and content will often play only at 480p. Knowing what version of Widevine DRM your device supports lets you know if you are streaming at the best possible quality or not.
