Wind erosion is the natural process by which soil particles are detached, transported, and deposited by the wind. It occurs when wind speeds at the soil surface are strong enough to lift and move loose particles such as sand, silt, and clay, especially in dry and sparsely vegetated areas

. There are three main types of wind erosion based on how particles move:

  • Surface Creep: Larger soil particles (greater than 0.5 mm) roll or slide along the ground because they are too heavy to be lifted by the wind. These particles move by being pushed or dragged along the surface
  • Saltation: Medium-sized particles (0.1 mm to 0.5 mm) are lifted briefly into the air and then fall back to the surface in a hopping or bouncing motion. When these particles land, they can dislodge other particles, causing a chain reaction of movement. Saltation also causes attrition, where particles collide and break into finer dust
  • Suspension: Very fine particles (less than 0.1 mm), such as dust and silt, are lifted high into the atmosphere and can be transported over long distances. This suspended dust can cause abrasion or sandblasting effects on surfaces it encounters

Wind erosion involves two key processes:

  • Deflation: The removal of loose, fine-grained particles from the surface by turbulent wind action, which can lower the land surface over time and create features like deflation hollows or blowouts
  • Abrasion: The wearing down of surfaces by the impact of windborne particles acting like tiny projectiles, shaping landscapes by smoothing and polishing exposed surfaces

Wind erosion is especially significant in arid and semi-arid regions where vegetation is sparse and soil moisture is low. It can negatively impact soil health, ecosystem function, agricultural productivity, and air quality by removing nutrient-rich topsoil and generating dust storms. Human activities such as farming, construction, and off-road vehicle use can exacerbate wind erosion by disturbing soil and removing protective vegetation
