Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children. It is designed to support people who are on low pay and have children. One person per household may receive this payment. To qualify for WFP, the following criteria must be met:

  • You have one or more children
  • You work 38 hours or more per fortnight in paid employment, and you can also combine your weekly hours with your partners hours to help meet the requirements
  • You are the higher earner in your relationship
  • Your employment is expected to continue for at least 3 months
  • Your income is calculated to be below a certain threshold

The amount of WFP you receive depends on your family income and the number of children you have. To calculate your WFP, you can use a worksheet provided by Citizens Information. The worksheet helps you work out the amount of WFP you may get based on your family income and size. The payment pays 60% of the difference between your total family income and the income limit which applies to your family.
