Each year, the team that wins the Stanley Cup gets to engrave the names of players, coaches, management, and club staff on the bottom ring of the Cup. When the Stanley Cup was first given by Lord Stanley in 1892, it had the words "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" engraved on one side of the outside rim, and "From Stanley of Preston" on the other side. The name "Stanley Cup" was given to it as early as May 1, 1893, when an Ottawa Journal article used the name as a title. The first ring became full after 1902, and a second ring was not added until 1909 by the Ottawa Senators. The Montreal Wanderers were the first team to add their roster to the cup in 1907 (on the inside bowl), but regular engraving of the roster did not start until 1924.
