Deion Sanders, the head coach of Jackson State, had surgery after developing three femoral arterial blood clots. As a result, he had to have his left legs big toe and the second toe severed. Sanders had to have his leg "filleted open" and drained last fall to prevent a complete amputation from the knee down. Sanders has suffered circulation problems in his arteries, which carry blood away from the heart, as opposed to his veins, which carry it back. He has undergone 10 surgeries on his left leg since September 2021, with more procedures apparently needed. Sanders family has a long history of blood clots, which was discovered after his blood clot diagnosis. Despite the amputations, he continues to grapple with issues related to blood clots and enduring pain in the same foot. Sanders missed three games after his left big toe and second toe were amputated.
