Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s voice has been described as raspy, strained, tight, and breathy. He has been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called spasmodic dysphonia. This disorder causes involuntary spasms in the muscles of the voice box, also known as the larynx, which can strain an individuals ability to speak and cause their voice to sound hoarse or breathy. There is no cure for spasmodic dysphonia, but patients can undergo speech therapy or counseling to manage the symptoms. Voice therapy can teach a person behavioral strategies to better manage spasmodic dysphonia symptoms, such as breaks, strain, roughness, breathiness, and effortful voicing. Differentiating spasmodic dysphonia from related voice conditions is important for proper diagnosis and treatment.
