Xenophobia is the fear or dislike of anything perceived as being foreign or strange. It is an expression based on the perception that a conflict exists between an in-group and an out-group. Xenophobia can manifest as hostility towards immigrants, refugees, religious minorities, people from different cultures, or anyone deemed strange or foreign by the dominant group in a society. It can overlap with racism, but the two are mutually exclusive. While racism is a belief that gauges an individuals worth and capabilities based on their physical attributes like the color of their skin and hair, xenophobia is a fear of foreigners and their customs that often transforms into intense dislike. Xenophobia tends to divide people into two groups - insiders and outsiders, leading to fear and insecurity about outsiders who are presumed to pose a threat to the existing inhabitants. Causes of xenophobia include a lack of exposure to other cultures, economic insecurity, and political manipulation. To fight xenophobia, it is essential to promote cultural exchange, education, and awareness, and to challenge xenophobic attitudes and behaviors.
