Yin and yang is a concept that originated in Chinese philosophy, describing opposite but interconnected, mutually perpetuating forces. In Chinese cosmology, the universe creates itself out of a primary chaos of material energy, organized into the cycles of yin and yang and formed into objects and lives. Yin is receptive while yang is active. Yang energy can be described as fast-moving, loud, active, and brightly lit, and is associated with masculinity, the sun, and positivity. Yin energy, on the other hand, is considered to be slow, cool, wet, and dark, and is related to curves, inactivity, and softness. Yin and yang are interconnected and interdependent, and there is really no separation between the two. Even within the yin-yang symbol, there is always a little dot of black in the white section, and a dot of white in the black section. The concept of yin and yang is used in feng shui, the art and science of placement, to promote health, wellness, and longevity by ensuring that the elements of yin and yang are in balance in ones environment.
