Zirconia, also known as zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), is a white crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is found in its most natural form in the mineral baddeleyite, but it can also be chemically derived from zircon. Zirconia is produced by calcining zirconium compounds, exploiting its high thermostability. It is a newer material for dental restorative treatments and is a type of ceramic that is stronger than porcelain and some metal alloys. Zirconia crowns are caps that protect damaged teeth and are made from zirconium dioxide, a white powdered ceramic material. Zirconia is characterized by good mechanical properties and stability at high temperatures, strong thermal and corrosion resistance, chemical inertness, and consistent quality. It is used in a wide range of refractory products, ceramic colors and pigments, electronic applications, friction materials, welding rods, and zirconium metal and alloys. Zirconia has excellent biocompatibility, ensuring it has replaced alumina as the material of choice for prosthesis devices such as hip joints or femoral ball heads. Cubic zirconia is one of the most well-known forms of zirconia and is commonly known as a synthetic diamond.
