"Zombie" is a protest song by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, written by the bands lead singer Dolores ORiordan about The Troubles in Northern Ireland). The song was released in 1994 and became the bands biggest-selling single, reaching number one in Germany, Australia, and France, and topping the US alternative rock charts). The songs title and chorus are likely a reference to mindless troops, just following what the authorities say, killing or harming with no personal thought on the matter. The lyrics of the song were inspired by the death of two children in an IRA bombing in the Cheshire town of Warrington. The songs anti-terrorism stance struck a chord when it was first released, and it won the Best Song award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards. The songs message combined with the singers warbling voice created both a great deal of tension and reason to take notice.
