Pearl Harbor is located on the island of Oahu, which is part of the state of Hawaii. It is a lagoon harbor situated about 10 miles west of Honolulu. The Hawaiian name for Pearl Harbor is Puʻuloa, which means "long hill". The harbor was later named Pearl Harbor for the pearl oysters that were once harvested from the waters. Pearl Harbor is the largest natural harbor in Hawaii and is still an active U.S. naval base. Visitors can pay their respects to the 1,177 young sailors who died during the Japanese sneak attack on the USS Arizona Memorial, which is located in Pearl Harbor.
