Steve Irwin, the Australian zookeeper, conservationist, and television personality, was killed by a stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef on September 4, 2006. While snorkeling in shallow waters, Irwin approached a short-tail stingray from the rear in order to film it swimming away. The stingrays barb pierced his chest, penetrating his thoracic wall and heart, causing massive trauma. The camera crew captured every moment of the deadly strike, but the video has never been released to the public. After the stingray stabbed Steve Irwin, cameraman Justin Lyons brought him to the boat and tried to save his life, but Irwin was pronounced dead within 10 seconds of being examined by medics. Irwins death is the only fatality from a stingray captured on video, and one of the few human deaths from stingrays.
