There are several ways to kill grass and weeds, including:
-
Nonselective herbicides: Glyphosate is a postemergence translocated herbicide that effectively kills turf and grassy and broadleaf weeds. Glyphosate is translocated rapidly in all actively growing plants. Make applications when your turf is actively growing. Do not water within 48 hours after treatment. It may take up to 7 days after the application for the grass to completely absorb the material and for symptoms to show. Depending on temperature, it can take up to 2 weeks for the entire lawn to die.
-
Salt: An effective and inexpensive method to kill grass and weeds that are just sprouting is simply spreading salt onto them. You can also consider putting salt between your patio bricks or blocks if you find unwanted grass coming up between them. This is however effective right at the beginning when you notice that grass and weeds are just coming up.
-
Mulching: Using organic mulch will smother the weeds even before they get a chance to grow. You can use anything from bark, compost, hay or straw or dried leaves for creating this organic mulch. Add a thick layer to the soil and leave it on for a while. Mulching is not only effective in killing weeds, but it also helps to retain moisture in the soil and adds nutrients to it.
-
Boiling water: If you want an even simpler method, you can use boiling water to kill weeds. This is especially effective for areas like the cracks in pavement, as you can toss the water on and avoid doing damage to anything fragile nearby.
-
Homemade weed killer: You can make an effective weed killer right from home using vinegar, salt, and liquid dishwashing soap. This mixture can be applied to weeds or grass on a dry, sunny day to areas you don’t want to see vegetation of any kind in the future. The presence of salt in this recipe is what will eventually bring permanence to your weed killing. The salt will penetrate and leach into the soil. It may take several applications, but eventually, the weeds will die.
Its important to note that some of these methods may not be selective and can kill any plant they come into contact with. Therefore, its important to use them carefully and only in areas where you dont want any vegetation to grow.
