However, this method takes a long time and is not aesthetically pleasing. Killing a tree stump by covering it can take as little as six months to as long as 18 months.

2. Epsom salt: One of the easiest methods to kill a tree stump and its root system is with Epsom salt. The magnesium sulfate in the Epsom salt draws the essential moisture from the plant in a process called desiccation, which is the drying out of a living organism. Drill holes into the tree stump, fill the holes with Epsom salt, and apply water to the top of the tree stump to dissolve the salt.

3. Rock salt: Rock salt is similar in composition to Epsom salt, which means that it can also be effective at killing off a tree stump. Drill holes into your stump, pour rock salt into the holes, and pack it in as deeply into the holes as possible. This method is similar to the Epsom salt method, but the application is different.

4. Systemic herbicide: This is the quickest but also the most environmentally damaging method of killing a tree stump. Using an herbicide such as Triclopyr is especially effective. Drilling holes into the stump will help the hot water kill deep and exposed roots.

6. Grinding: The fastest way to get rid of a tree stump is by grinding. During the grinding process, you’ll use a specialized machine called a “stump grinder,” which breaks apart the wood of the tree and tears the roots.
