Oktoberfest beer is traditionally a lager, predominantly either Märzen or Festbier style. Märzen is a darker amber lager with a rich, malty sweetness and a medium to full body; it was historically brewed in March and served at Oktoberfest. Festbier, which is lighter and golden in color, is hoppier and more refreshing but still malty, and it has become the more common beer served at the modern Oktoberfest festival in Munich. Both styles are characterized by their balanced malt and hop flavors and typically have an alcohol content around 5.5-6.3% ABV. Importantly, authentic Oktoberfest beers are brewed by the six Munich breweries and meet strict specifications under the Reinheitsgebot beer purity law.
