Several breeds of chickens lay blue eggs, including:
-
Araucanas: This breed originated in Chile and is known for its unique features, including being rumpless and tufted. They lay blue eggs, but not exclusively.
-
Ameraucanas: These chickens became standardized in 1984 and now exclusively lay blue eggs.
-
Cream Legbars: This 20th-century breed was created by two professors at Cambridge University in England who were working with chicken genetics to try and create an auto-sexing chicken. They lay blue eggs.
-
Easter Eggers: These are not a recognized breed by the American Poultry Association but rather a mix of different breeds that carry the blue egg-laying gene. They are very easy to find and inexpensive compared to some of the other blue egg-laying chicken breeds. Since they are a hybrid, you may also get some green, cream, and brown eggs.
Other breeds that lay blue eggs include the Dongxiang blue chicken and the Lushi chicken, both of which are native to China.
