Utah's death penalty primarily uses lethal injection as the method of execution. However, the firing squad is also a legal alternative under Utah law, particularly if the state cannot obtain the necessary drugs for lethal injection within 30 days of a scheduled execution or if the inmate chose firing squad before 2004. Utah is one of the few states to have used firing squads in modern times and remains the only state besides South Carolina and Nevada to permit this method. Executions occur at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City, and the firing squad option was restored in 2015 as a backup if lethal injection is not feasible.
