The official languages of Israel are Hebrew and Arabic. Hebrew is the primary language of the Jewish population in Israel and was declared the official language of the state upon Israels establishment in 1948. Arabic is the primary language of the Arab population in Israel and is also the official language of the country. The use of both languages is enshrined in Israeli law, and government institutions and services are required to provide information in both Hebrew and Arabic. In addition to Hebrew and Arabic, many Israelis also speak other languages, including Russian, English, Yiddish, and French. Russian is spoken by about 20% of the Israeli population, mainly by the large immigrant population from the former Soviet Union. English is a known foreign language by a significant proportion of the Israeli population as it is used widely in official logos and road signs alongside Hebrew and Arabic.
