The official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish. Greek is spoken by about 80% of the population and Turkish is spoken by Turkish Cypriots. Cypriot Turkish is a blend of Ottoman Turkish and the Yörük dialect spoken in the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey, and it is mutually intelligible with Standard Turkish. In addition to Greek and Turkish, there are also other languages spoken by minorities in Cyprus, including Armenian and Cypriot Arabic. Armenian and Arabic are spoken by about 2.7% of the population and are primarily combined with Greek. English is also widely spoken in Cyprus, especially in tourism and culture, and most people in the country are familiar with it. In fact, English is the language of instruction in many of the higher education institutes in Cyprus, especially in the private sector. According to a Eurobarometer report, 73% of the population of Cyprus can speak English. Other foreign languages spoken in Cyprus include French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish.
