Puerto Rico has two official languages: Spanish and English. Spanish is the most spoken and written language in Puerto Rico, and the vast majority of Puerto Ricans speak Spanish as their native language. English is the second official language, and it is taught in all Puerto Rican schools. However, fewer than 20% of Puerto Ricans speak English fluently. English is the primary language for all of the U.S. federal agencies in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican Spanish is unique and has been influenced by the islands history, including the blending of many African languages, indigenous languages, and European languages. Puerto Ricans have integrated thousands of Taíno words, adopted some pronunciation habits from African dialects, and incorporated English words or phrases into the language.
