Both Spanish and English are official languages in Puerto Rico. However, Spanish is the dominant language, with over 94% of the population speaking it as their native language. English is taught in all Puerto Rican schools and is the primary language for all of the U.S. federal agencies in Puerto Rico. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, fewer than 20% of Puerto Ricans speak English fluently. Puerto Rican Spanish is unique and has been influenced by the islands history, including the blending of many African languages, indigenous languages, and European languages. Puerto Ricans can understand Spanish speakers from other countries, and while there may be some differences, they are not excessive and do not obstruct communication.
