The national anthem of New Zealand is "God Defend New Zealand". It is one of two official national anthems of equal status in New Zealand, the other being "God Save the King". The English version of the anthem was written by Thomas Bracken in the 1870s, and the Māori version was written by Thomas Henry Smith in 1878. The music was composed by John Joseph Woods, who won a competition to set the text to music in 1976. The anthem is commonly sung in both English and Māori, with the first verse sung twice.
