We live in the troposphere, which is the lowest layer of the atmosphere and extends from the surface of the Earth to around seven miles up. This layer contains most of our weather, including clouds and precipitation, and is where the air we breathe is located. The temperature in the troposphere gets colder as the distance above the Earth increases, by about 6.5°C per kilometer. The other layers of the atmosphere, based on temperature, are the stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere.
