The Dead Sea is a saltwater lake that is located on the border between Israel and Jordan. It is known for its high salt and mineral content, which gives it powerful healing properties and makes it a popular destination for treating skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, and cellulite, as well as muscle ache and arthritis. However, the Dead Sea is completely devoid of life, except for some microorganisms and algae that can survive in its hyper-saline conditions. Fish and other macroscopic aquatic organisms cannot survive in the Dead Seas water due to its extreme salinity. The plant life along the shores is discontinuous and consists mainly of halophytes, which are plants that grow in salty or alkaline soil. The Dead Sea is not completely dead, though. Freshwater springs at the bottom of the lake have been found to contain several types of microorganisms, including bacteria, single-celled algae, cyanobacteria, and green sulfur bacteria.
