The Earth orbits the Sun due to the gravitational attraction between the two celestial bodies. The Suns gravity holds the Earth and other planets in their orbits, and there is no other force in the Solar System that can stop them. The Earth is fairly close to the Sun, at a distance of about 150 million km (93 million miles), and its orbit around the Sun takes 940 million km and 365.24 days, or one year. The Suns gravitational force is strongest at its center, so planets that are closest to the Sun will be pulled in tighter, causing the Earths orbit to be elliptical, meaning it is closer to the Sun at certain points and farther away at others. In addition to orbiting the Sun, the Earth is also spinning on an axis running through the North and South Poles, which is what gives us day and night. The Earth rotates at 1,670 km/h (1,030 mph) around the polar axis, but it doesn’t do this at right angles to its orbital path. The axis is tilted over by 23.5°, which is why all Earth globes are leaning over.
